Agreed - That the minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Active and Cohesive Communities Scrutiny Committee and the Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee held on 6 March 2017 be regarded as correct record of the proceedings.

Dementia Friendly Communities - Will Boyce, Chief Executive of Approach to present

Minutes:

Will Boyce, Chief Executive of Approach explained to members of the Joint Scrutiny Committee why dementia was an issue of concern for our communities.  Continuing Will Boyce placed greater emphasis on living well with dementia than the negative views of the disease.  He referred to the most common 2 forms of dementia and their profiles, members also viewed PET scan images of a healthy brain and a brain with advanced dementia.

 

Will Boyce concluded his discussion with an examination of ways to make our communities more understanding and tolerant.

 

Members thanked Will Boyce for his informative and engaging approach to the issue of dementia and in response Mr Boyce offered his support with the proposed dementia friendly swimming action plan.

Dementia Friendly Swimming Action Plan pdf icon PDF 252 KB

Minutes:

The Head of Leisure and Cultural Services, Rob Foster, submitted a Generic Local Action Plan for Year 1 of a Dementia Friendly Swimming Programme which he and other officers had completed as far as possible. 

 

Members of the Joint Committee were supportive of the proposals and agreed that a report be submitted to Cabinet explaining the proposals and seeking support to continue with the Action Plan and to implement the proposals.

 

To help with the completion of the Action Plan and subsequent introduction of the proposals Councillor Frankish, Councillor G Williams and Councillor J Cooper volunteered their help and assistance to oversee the project.
